                         The Linux Driver Petition

We at Libranet are committed to helping to make the Linux operating
system as functional as possible for Linux desktop users.

Linux is hampered by a lack of drivers for some pc devices, notably
                                 printers.

In an effort to help correct this, we are collecting signatures to a
petition which will be submitted to the major producers of pc devices.

It is our hope that we will collect 2,000,000 signatures within a
short time and that this will cause these companies to take notice of
the need to co-operate with Linux developers in producing Linux
                        drivers for their products.

The market force of Linux is strong and we feel that this petition
                           will demonstrate this.

We are hosting this petition in the expectation that this will bring
benefits to the Linux community and to the open source community in
                                  general.

We ask you to sign the petition and join us in helping make Linux even
                         better than it already is.
                                 Thank you.

The petition opened on Dec 30, 1999
At Sun Jan 23 10:39:00 2000 PST (GMT-8) the number of signatures was
                                   35122
Please help us spread the word.

                         THE LINUX DRIVERS PETITION

We, members of the Linux community and the computing population in
general, believe that you, the manufacturers of pc computing devices,
should make available to Linux developers full specifications of your
devices, so that Linux compatible device drivers can be produced for
your products. If you feel this information is confidential, then we
ask you to write, and make freely available, drivers for your
                                 products.

We believe that Linux is not a second class operating system and that
your focus on providing drivers for the Microsoft operating system
only is misguided and disregards the many millions of Linux users.
We ask you to take notice of companies who recognize the Linux
community and who provide versions of their programs for both
                            Microsoft and Linux.

We feel that you cannot ignore the enormous and growing popularity of
Linux and that efforts on your part to provide drivers and/or
specifications will enhance your own sales efforts.

                       Thank you for your attention.
